A place
between worlds.

Stand at the Locks long enough and you begin to notice that everything here is in the middle of becoming something else.

A boat rises. A gate opens. Salt water gives way to fresh. Westward lies the restless reach of Puget Sound and, beyond it, the wild Pacific. Eastward, the Ship Canal settles into a quieter rhythm, toward Lake Union and Lake Washington. You can stand between those worlds with your hands on the railing.

Below you, a salmon is making a much older journey. An ocean’s worth of distance has brought it to this particular current, this opening, this next small climb. There is something almost spiritual about watching it: the stubbornness of life, the mystery of return, an ending carrying the beginning of another generation.

The Locks hold another kind of passage, too. Working boats, weathered steel, rain on concrete. Here, Ballard’s maritime grit is still part of an ordinary afternoon. In a city that keeps remaking itself, this feels like one of the places where Seattle’s old character has kept a foothold—not behind glass, but out in the weather, doing its work.

This is a place steeped in history, though the story begins long before its gates. The waters and salmon of this region have sustained Indigenous communities for generations beyond the life of the canal. The engineering is remarkable. So is the living world that keeps finding its way through it.

Ballard Salmon is a passion project by a Ballard dad, built for his kids. A way to bring a little of the wonder of this place home, and to give small feet another world to wander.

It grew into a game, a field guide, and this love letter to the neighborhood. You don’t need to know a Chinook from a coho to belong here. Just bring a little curiosity.
